"Writing the War": A conversation with Yusef Komunyakaa
Are you a Connecticut-area veteran who is interested in writing poetry, fiction, or memoir about your military experiences, or who is curious about vets who have done such writing? Then you may be interested in this event...
On Saturday March 8, 2008 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Trinity College in Hartford, veterans are invited to an informal discussion with Yusef Komunyakaa about the challenges and rewards of writing about military experiences.
A Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Komunyakaa's second book of poems, Dien Cai Dau, was based on his experiences in Vietnam, where he served as editor of a military newspaper and as an information specialist. Dien Cai Dau has been highly praised both as an expression of African-American soldier's experience in Vietnam and as a work that acknowledges the common humanity shared by white and black soldiers as well as the Vietnamese people. Komunyakaa has gone on to a distinguished career as a poet, publishing seven books and winning many prizes and awards. He has taught at Princeton University and is currently Professor and distinguished Senior Poet at New York University.
This event will take place at 115 Allen Place, Hartford (a small house located on the Trinity campus). The location is handicap accessible, and a parking lot can be found to the side and behind the building. Refreshments will be served.
Please RSVP to Clare.Rossini@trincoll.edu or 860-297-2360. Reservations are not necessary but will help us plan for the event.

Connecticut Foundation for Dental Outreach
The Connecticut Foundation for Dental Outreach is introducing the Connecticut Mission of Mercy (CTMOM). CTMOM will be a large scale, multi-chair dental clinic that travels around the state annually to underserved areas. The concept is simple: to create a multi-care dental clinic in a large facility and then open the clinic door to the community. Dental services will be provided to anyone (children, adults, and the elderly) who is without dental insurance and in a low income situation and they are available for free. Patients will be screened and treated based on their most urgent needs. CTMOM will be staffed by volunteer dentists, UCONN dental students, dental hygienists and dental assistants. They will provide cleanings, fillings and extractions at no cost.
This year's event will be held at the former Tolland High School, 1 Eagle Hill Drive, Tolland, CT on Saturday, April 12 from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday April 13 from 5 a.m. to 12 noon.
For more information, go to www.csda.com/ctmom/ctmom1.html or call Kerry Fair, 860-336-9377 or Patti Sue Brown 860-303-9954, SPAN Facilitators.
