Brain Injury Services

When an individual with a brain injury, family member, caregiver, or professional turns to the Brain Injury Alliance of Connecticut (BIAC) for assistance, that assistance is provided by a Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS). The specialist's role is to offer the individualized support and guidance required to ensure that the often complex and overwhelming challenges experienced following a brain injury are handled more easily and effectively.

An individual with a brain injury, family member, caregiver, or professional may simply require the name of a specific resource. When the need is more complex, however, our Certified Brain Injury Specialists provide the guidance and support required to identify and link an individual to appropriate services and programs. Self–advocacy skills are also established as individuals with brain injuries and family members move toward their goals. Individual consultation with a Certified Brain Injury Specialist can be provided in our Windsor office by scheduling an appointment.

The resources BIAC’s Certified Brain Injury Specialists provide may include:

  • Linkages to state agencies, legal services, acute care, rehabilitation programs and specialists within the brain injury community.
  • Individual Advocacy—BIAC’s Certified Brain Injury Specialists will provide the tools needed to advocate for yourself or a loved one. When that is not possible, our team can advocate more directly.
  • The use of “natural supports” and strategies to make performing activities of daily living, returning to work, school and the community possible.
  • Information about the support groups that BIAC coordinates throughout the state for individuals with brain injuries, families, caregivers and veterans.
  • Information on the Connecticut Acquired Brain Injury Waiver—a Medicaid home and community-based services program—including how to access services and assistance with problems/concerns.
  • Customized packet of materials in an easily understandable format.
  • Leisure activities for survivors and their family members.

And most important, navigating life’s challenges after a brain injury, and offering support along the way.
